This is simply not what we want to do. 22.04 with GNOME is an LTS and will remain supported for a while longer. If someone needs GNOME still, they can stay on 22.04. |

Hypothetically, if we released 24.04 with GNOME, we would not be able to release COSMIC until 26.04, and would have to halt work on COSMIC in order to rewrite all of our existing patches for the old GNOME/GTK3 release for new GNOME/GTK4 release. Major transitional changes cannot be done mid release. Only when a release upgrade is performed. We already have all the transitional packaging in place to migrate 22.04 systems to the new COSMIC platform, so it's just a matter of finishing COSMIC. |

Cosmic DE is in alpha (the progress is really impressive!) so I think there should be an "old fashioned" 24.04 release with the old, Gnome based DE, so people using 22.04 could upgrade their system to get the latest packages.
Back then when Canonical developed Unity, first they made a Netbook variant with the new DE, and the next version was the one that shipped Unity on the regular release.
I think the best way could be if 24.04 would remain on Gnome, but the interim releases (25.04, 25.10) would ship with Cosmic DE, so the next LTS could shipped with a polished Cosmic DE.
