Cannot load the bib file into papercite

I tried almost every possible way how to load the .bib file into papercite, but to no avail:

• added the file as: wp-content/papercite-data/bib/file.bib
• added the file as https link: https://example.com/wp-content/papercite-data/bib/file.bib
• tried file.bib only
• tried $DATA/bib/file.bib and custom://data/bib/file.bib

always getting the following:

Using the full https link https://example.com/wp-content/papercite-data/bib/file.bib Firefox is able to download the bib file, which is not empty, it has more than 600 entries. The bib file has been created using JabRef, encoding is UTF-8 by default.

I wonder where am I making the mistake. Please help!
